Benefits of a Healthy Nervous System
The Fajardo Method’s® focus on nervous system health addresses not only movement health, but also the healthy functioning of your whole body. Now you can address movement challenges and chronic pain, memory issues, cardiovascular health, digestion, immune system health, and much more all through the same process, which is what gives the Fajardo Method® a holistic approach to health and wellness. Let’s take a closer look at how this works.
The state of the autonomic nervous system determines whether the body is in defensive / survival mode, or whether it is in rest and repair mode. When the body is in the sympathetic, or fight or flight, nervous system state it is in defensive / survival mode, and in this mode, our normal body functions are compromised in many ways that have negative impacts on our health if sustained for a long period of time. For example:
- Digestion stops, making it difficult to digest complex foods such as gluten and other common allergens
- Immune system function is compromised due to decreased tissue hydration and poor circulation function in fight or flight.
- Body structure compresses, especially at the joints, leading to chronic pain or joint pain
- Memory formation is impaired
On the other hand, when the nervous system is in the parasympathetic nervous system state, the body is able to function normally, as well as to repair and regenerate. A healthy nervous system has an optimal balance of activation of the parasympathetic nervous system and activation of the sympathetic nervous system. In modern culture, our lifestyle often makes it difficult to flip back to the parasympathetic state once the sympathetic has been activated, and it is therefore not uncommon to experience chronic over activation of the fight or flight nervous system. The Fajardo Method® helps strengthen the capability to flip from sympathetic to parasympathetic and strengthens the ability to be in the parasympathetic nervous system state, which can also be thought of as stress reduction. You can read more about the Fajardo Method® approach to stress reduction.
Because prolonged stress has such broad effects that negatively impact health over time, the benefits of stress reduction are equally broad. The following are some of the areas where function is greatly improved by a healthy nervous system:
Several of these benefits relate to how valve system function is affected by stress, so I will also provide an explanation of the valve system and how it works.
